When we saw this film at the 2025 Sydney Film Festival we fell passionately in love, and we’ve been thinking and talking about it ever since, busting to share it with all those among you who love inquisitive, intimate and amusing explorations of life … and beautiful film making. If you watch the trailer you’ll begin to understand why.

Frequently hilarious, sometimes absurd, always entertaining, THE LOVE THAT REMAINS conveys an extraordinary love for its characters and the gorgeous Icelandic environment. The story centres on a year in the life of an Icelandic family of five, as the parents attempt to navigate a troubled marriage with tenderness.

Though seemingly in the throes of splitting up, Anna and Magnus still spend time together for the sake of their three children. Magnus works at sea, infrequently returning to land, where he asserts himself as the patriarch with very limited efficacy. Anna is an artist whose vast and impressive works fail to receive suitable recognition. In their interactions, whilst there’s signs of why the separation is happening, but there’s also the familiarity of a long-held love and a glimmer of a chance of reconciliation…such are the subtleties of this magnificent film.
