We kick off our series of Five Feelgood Fridays – GA tickets for just $30 – with one of our favourite films from the past year. The fabulous Aubrey Plaza is completely fabulous in MY OLD ASS, a searing coming-of-age story that will have you laughing and crying and reevaluating your life in turn.
While on an 18th birthday camping getaway, free-spirited Elliott (Maisy Stella) and her friends decide to partake in some magic mushrooms, which for Elliot, leads to her coming face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self (played by Aubrey Plaza). When Elliott’s “old ass” starts handing out warnings about what her younger self should and shouldn’t do, (e.g. Wear your retainer. Moisturize. Be nice to your mom. Spend more time with your brothers), Elliott realises she has some stuff to rethink, but the one bit of advice she doesn’t understand is, “Whatever you do don’t get involved with Chad.” At 18, she’s infatuated only by girls, and she doesn’t even know a Chad. Later that very same summer, all that changes …and what follows is beautiful.

“This film is a gift” – Screen Rant
“A future classic” – Variety
“If you want to see great acting that’s unadorned, not fancy, and very much in the style of 2024, see Plaza in the climactic scene from “My Old Ass.” You will walk out of this film different than when you walked in, and a little bit better for the experience.” – San Francisco Chronicle
