Timothée Chalamet is wild and wonderful as Marty Mauser, a young man with an abundance of self-belief, a passion for women, and a penchant for ping pong. Yet for all his sharp wittedness, Marty just can’t keep out of trouble. If only he could find a way to make his one great dream come true – to be acknowledged as the greatest ping pong player of his time. Set in 1950s New York, with stopovers in London and Japan, the film’s relentless allure is added to by a fabulous 1980s soundtrack.
Director Josh Safdie (Uncut Gems) has created a fantastic and enthralling story that like Marty, flies from one adventure to another. Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Tyler The Creator and Kevin O’Leary deliver plenty of fuel in support of Chalamet, who is on fire.
