A quirky, touching and wonderfully entertaining film, RENTAL FAMILY explores the meaning of love and family, and the different perspectives of Japanese and Western culture towards family. Brendan Fraser is (again) excellent as an American actor based in Tokyo, who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, where he is hired to play stand-in roles for families in real life situations – a mourner at a funeral, a journalist, a long lost father, and even a false groom. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers belonging, and a new perspective on the immense beauty of human connection. RENTAL FAMILY is an intriguing view of Japanese society.
