Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor are superb in this beautiful film that tenderly captures the feelings we have when atop the heights of love, and the longing that accompanies love lost. Lionel (Mescal) and David (O’Connor) meet in 1917 and fall for each other through their deep and mutual love for folk music. After World War One separates them, they reunite in 1920 to travel through rural Maine, using new technology to record and preserve folk songs from far flung regions. A film about love, memory, and cultural preservation, THE HISTORY OF SOUND explores how relationships endure and evolve through shared experiences and unwanted separation.
