On closing night, we roll out the red carpet as we’re joined by cast and crew for the Sydney premiere of SPIT.

‘Spit’ is of course the character made infamous by David Wenham in the tremendous 2003 comedy thriller GETTIN’ SQUARE. 22 years later he is back, with gusto and more hilarious mayhem.

When ex-junkie and petty crim, Johnny Spitieri (Wenham), flies into Australia on a false passport, he is locked up in an Immigration Detention Centre while authorities determine his true identity. Spit passes his time by making new friends amongst his fellow detainees, mostly refugees, teaching them need-to-know things, such as how certain Australia swear words have multiple uses, and what it means to be truly Australian. Meantime gangster Chicka Martin (Gary Sweet), and his crooked cop mate, Arne Deviers (David Field), have got wind of Spit’s return and are convinced he needs to be silenced. At the same time, alerted to his return, the Independent Public Integrity Commission is convinced the bumbling amnesiac is really an unlikely criminal mastermind and want his testimony. As Johnny talks up a storm without saying anything at all, he must out-run everyone who wants a piece of him. In a delightful twist, the only people he can rely on are his new friends from the detention centre.
